Individual mindfulness

Do you want to learn what mindfulness is all about, and what practical skills you may gain to practice emotional intelligence, do you want to broaden your perspective on resolving conflicts and explore your perception on sounds and human senses, do you want to enjoy yoga, breathing exercises, Thai massage and make great friendships and vivid memories?

Well, just follow our news for the second edition of the memorable Erasmus+ Training course called Individual Wellness for Mindful Youth Work training organized by MOVE to Be You in rural Austria. The first edition of this great training happened from 1-9th of April at Blue Whale Education Center in Mönichkirchen. Our Bulgarian participants mingled with representatives from Italy, Austria, Turkey, Slovakia, Belgium, Greece, Poland and Spain – a totally of 27 participants.

Every day of the program was intense, versatile, practical, and knowledgeable and each morning started with a sound ritual that all of us liked from the very beginning. That favourite ritual gave us the strength, inspiration and motivation to learn, be open, vocal and explore what gifts the day would offer. The first day, of course, was dedicated to knowing each other but also to learning more about us through funny icebreakers, games, reflections, and meditations.

On the next 2 days participants were divided in 5 groups as per their interests, talents and skills to work on an activity called "From formal to non-formal", which represented the core of the "act as multipliers" approach that our great trainers managed to implement. Each group worked on a specific conflict after being familiarized by its theory. For interpersonal conflict the question ‘Who are you?’ was used, so the participants could experience this type of conflict directly on themselves. For the other types of conflicts, group participants created a theatrical performance on the assigned type of conflict.  The 3rd day also was dedicated to mindful movement. We enjoyed expressing emotions through movement and letting ourselves be vulnerable. We felt that understanding ourselves meant understanding our bodies so that was a great experience. In the first 2 evenings, all participants shared their cultural diversity through delicious food, drinks, dances, traditions and the spirit of competition during funny games.

On the next day, we focused on creativity in yoga sessions, and meditation and created a circle, sharing all our similarities and differences while passing a wool to create kind of a spider web with it. We analyzed, dug deeper in ourselves and eventually we put the “spider webs” on the floor. Everyone took scissors, cut a piece of the wool, created a bracelet and put it on someone else's hand. Somehow this activity made us more connected.

On the 5th of April the focus was on promoting mindfulness and relaxation. We had a sound meditation and a silent walk. Both activities were very powerful, they were designed to help us become more present in the moment and to develop a greater awareness of our surroundings. They provided us with the opportunity to disconnect from the pressures of daily life and to focus on the present moment.

On the evening of we had some free time – some people took advantage of the beautiful weather and went outside for a walk or bike ride, others stayed indoors to focus on work or studies and a group of lucky guys took a unique approach and went for a horse ride with a pedagogical horse trainer. That evening was a very special one – we held a shamanic circle where we shared deep thoughts and emotions with each other and as the night progressed, the group went outside for a ritual under the full moon. Each person wrote down their personal fears on a piece of paper, which was then burned in a bonfire. This symbolic act of letting go of fear allowed for a meaningful and cathartic experience for everyone involved.

On the next day, we worked in groups in discussing the characters of a famous story, reaching an agreement in making a list of them, from the most to the least guilty. Later we continued with acro yoga, where the key to be successful in completing the exercises was to trust the partner, to be decisive and proceed with conviction. In the afternoon, we dedicated some time for creating a personal mandala using elements of the nature surrounding them. The principle of ‘only footsteps’ is used, meaning that the only visible sign of our presence in the place should be our feet. When everyone finished the presentation of the personal mandala, every element of it was left in the same place where it was found.

We also enjoyed 2 inspirational talent nights where participants were given the stage to present themselves by singing, dancing, storytelling, poetry, martial arts, and playing musical instruments.

At the end of the project, we were given the freedom to choose how to sum up its essence – by writing, video or art. On the final evening, we gathered for a big and delicious supper with connected tables, where with the shared music, big hugs, crazy laughing, jokes and stories from the training we celebrated our last day of this incredible training.

This training was unforgettable, powerful, very well organized and highly inspirational. So big thank you to everyone who had a role in creating and conducting that valuable experience for us!

From Solidarity to Success: Sofia’s Integrated Approach to Migrant Services

Curious about a model for a one-stop locale for migrant services?
In Sofia, Bulgaria we witnessed just that while meeting with the Sofia Development Association. They are doing fantastic work by uniting with other civil society organizations to enhance their respective work to assist newcomers to Bulgaria at the Bureau for Information and Services for Third Country Nationals.  Bureau for Information and Services for Third Country Nationals.

Having an Afghani lunch at Khala Sara Foodz located in the historical Women's Market

We were made aware of this work the end of May, when the consortium of ACCT partners traveled to Sofia, Bulgaria and for our Transnational Partner Meeting and were warmly welcomed by Tania Marincheshka from Association on Refugees and Migrants Bulgaria. During our 2nd in-person gathering, we had the opportunity to review the proposed activities from each partner to be used in both our in-person and online trainings, finalize the plan for our poster competition, and launch our website. We also had the chance to explore the vibrant local culinary scene in Sofia, enjoying delicious meals at an Afghan and Iraqi restaurants — if you get to visit Bulgaria, check out Khala Sara Foodz & Ashurbanipal!
One of the highlights of our meeting was the discussion with Sevdalina Voynova and her staff from the Sofia Development Association, where we learned about the Bureau for Information and Services for Third Country Nationals. This center plays a crucial role in providing a wide array of help they were providing to migrants, including assistance with accessing the labor market, interpretation, document filling, referral to institutions, and more in 7 languages! We were impressed by the comprehensive range of services provided by the Bureau, which demonstrates this group of 15 NGO’s and the municipality’s commitment to supporting and including third country nationals into society. In 2021 alone, they were able to provide services to approximately 100 newcomers per month in one localized center – allowing folks in need of assistance to locate one spot to navigate the needs that come with moving to a new country; an exemplary model indeed. This is made possible by the project titled CONNECTION: CONNEcting Cities Towards Integration actiON CONNECTION: CONNEcting Cities Towards Integration actiON which is funded by European Union’s Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund.

The insights gained from our meeting with the Sofia Development Association our discussions on the Bureau for Information and Services for Third Country Nationals, and the discussion and experiences being immersed in this local context, will undoubtedly contribute to the development of our anti-racism curriculums and training programs. As this project was recently recognized as an example of a ‘good practice’ by the EU, we are excited to incorporate these learnings and their examples into our work and continue fostering civic courage and combating racism throughout the EU.

Bulgaria and discrimination: there is progress, but the road is still a long one

A recent report by the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) takes stock of the fight against discrimination in Bulgaria. Progress has been registered in recent years, but many problems remain unresolved

What emerges from the latest report on Bulgaria by the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance, an independent body created by the Council of Europe, is a picture of lights and shadows, with significant improvements, but also numerous and persistent gray areas.

The study, completed in June 2022, but made public in October, starts off on some positive notes, recording progress compared to the previous report dating back to 2014. Various developments have been recorded in Bulgaria in recent years and praised by ECRI. First of all, the consolidation of the activities of the Commission for the protection against discrimination  , a public institution created in 2005, which in the last five years has finally received a more adequate economic endowment, allowing the opening of new offices in the area, today reaching 24.

Among the actions against hate speech, the most significant, also from a symbolic point of view, was the ban on holding the controversial "Lukov Marsh", a demonstration held annually on February 18 in the capital Sofia by ultra-nationalists and neo-Nazis in memory of General Hristo Lukov, member of the pro-Nazi wing of the Bulgarian army, killed by communist partisans in 1943. After years of heated controversy, in 2020 the Supreme Administrative Court banned the nightly torchlight procession that crossed the streets of the city centre, clearly referencing the choreography of the Third Reich.

Some innovations have also been seen in the field of the fight against discrimination against the LGBTI community, with an effort to create a synergy between civil society actors and institutions: in 2019, such effort culminated in the inclusion of NGOs active in the defence of LGBTI rights in training of police bodies aimed at recognising and repressing hate crimes.

Of central importance for Bulgaria, home to one of the largest Roma populations in the EU, is certainly the fight against discrimination on ethnic and racial grounds. Efforts aimed at integrating the Roma community, which remains highly discriminated and marginalised, have been made in the field of education: in preschools, for example, Bulgarian classes have been introduced for children of different mother tongue.

The practice of employing a mediator in the areas of healthcare, education, and job search is increasingly frequent and widespread: an approach that has shown positive results especially during the toughest periods of the Covid-19 pandemic, when it was essential to overcome the wall of widespread distrust of the community towards public institutions.

After the positive notes, however, the ECRI also raises numerous and strong criticisms against the government in Sofia. Despite the commission's repeated requests, for example, no monitoring mechanism has been created by the Bulgarian institutions to monitor or counter incidents of racial or anti-LGBTI discrimination. There is also a lack of in-depth studies capable of providing a complete picture of the situation with respect to sexual minorities in the country.

That the LGBTI community remains subject to numerous episodes of discrimination, including violence, is demonstrated by the numerous attacks suffered in Sofia by the LGBTI centre "Rainbow Hub". The last one featured Boyan Rasate, leader of the far-right political organisation "Bulgarian National Union", who devastated   the centre together with a group of his militants in October 2021.

After the attack, 11 foreign embassies in Sofia – including those of the United States, France, and the United Kingdom – signed a joint letter of protest. A few months later, Rasate was found guilty of "violating public order" and sentenced to a fine  .

Also in the field of discrimination on ethnic and racial grounds, the ECRI report can only note the persistence of structural marginalisation of the Roma community in Bulgaria, which according to estimates now makes up for around 10% of the country's population. In recent years, attacks and assaults against the community have continued.

Despite progress in the field of education, the school dropout rate among young Roma remains very high, especially when compared to the rest of the population, while the percentage of Roma persons with secondary and university education (respectively 9% and 0.5%) remains much lower than the average. Employment percentages are also concerning to say the least: if in 2021 the general unemployment rate stood at around 5.4%, in areas with a strong Roma presence, such as the Stolipinovo district in Plovdiv, it largely exceeded 80%.

In recent years, the situation has been made even worse by the Covid-19 pandemic, and by the subsequent prevention and containment measures carried out by the Sofia authorities, which have particularly affected workers in the Roma community, often employed in precarious jobs and in the informal economy.

On the topic of ethnic, sexual, and workplace discrimination, the first reflections on intersectionality have begun in Bulgaria in recent years, so far limited to the more aware sectors of civil society, but yet to be embraced by the institutions and the public opinion.

Among the pioneers, from this point of view, is Bulgarian NGO Amalipe, which in September 2022 organised one of the first seminars   on the subject with the aim of introducing young Roma people to the basics of intersectional discrimination, with particular reference to women and members of the Roma LGBTI community.

Trade unions have also contributed to starting a discussion on intersectionality in Bulgaria. In particular, in 2021, the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions of Bulgaria (KNSB), one of the main trade unions in the country, actively participated in a campaign led by the European Trade Union Confederation to call for a stronger European-level directive   on pay transparency, and to push for a gradual alignment of the wages of women – especially those part of discriminated or marginalised groups or communities – with those of men at the European level.

Anti-racism and Civic Courage Training (ACCT)

Anti-racism and Civic Courage Training (ACCT) is a transnational project focusing on the decrease of discrimination, including multi-dimensional discrimination and racism, xenophobia and other forms of intolerance. The partners also aim at combating discrimination, hate crime & hate speech across the EU.

От януари 2023
г., Асоциацията за бежанци и мигранти България е партньор по проекта ACCT

ACCT – Действай за Промяна!

Anti-racism and Civic Courage Training (ACCT)

-   Comparative Research Network (Берлин, Германия)

-   Perspekt Initiative (Хамбург, Германия)

-   Crossing Borders (Копенхаген, Дания)

-   Imagina (Алора, Испания)

-   Stowarzyszenie "Dla Ziemi" (Братник, Полша)
